Brittle nails?

My fingernails are soft and brittle.. I increase my calcium intake and I dont see any improvement.

Any tips to share?Brittle nails?
HI! Yikes, I know how you feel... My nail tech just used a new product on me and it is great! For the first time my nails are harder than ever. It is called Nail Teq II and there are 2 formulas she used. There are 2 bottles, one is FOUNDATION II and Intensive Therapy II and it has made them grow out like crazy. It is more costly than the Sally Hansen products... more along the lines of OPI. Check EBay and you can find it. I just bought my own so I can keep it layered on there so they won't chip or peel. Taking prenatal vitamins also will help, but this for me has been the best. Good luck! Hope this helps...Brittle nails?
NAIL ENVY!!!

A warm olive oil rub followed by glove wearing shall work wonders
You can try to apply Miho Virginal Oil daily on the fingernails. This Viriginal Oil helps to improve drynes on the skin and its just the right texture - not too oily. Can also be used to apply from head to toe.
i hear rubbing it with garlic makes the nails stronger. leave it on the nails for a period of time before you rinse your hands.
You can buy nail polish that is usually clear and strengthens your nails. You can also get tablets that you chew to help weak nails. I think the brand is Schuessler Tissue Salts or something like that. Both of these things can work well. Hope this helped!
take prenatal vitamins.

the increased vitamins (more than what you are gettin now) will make your nails and hair strong and shiny
you should take Iron pills! thats the only way to make your nails stronger
you may just have a genetically given trait...or you could be suffering from an endocrine disorder such as hypothyroidism and anything else dealing with hormones. go to the doctor and check it out. little signs like this often point to something else...its not anything to be worried about, however.

from my experience, i've used this buffer/shine thing, and it reall seems to help my nails grow both in strength and length. ..sall hansen ';hard as nails'; will help.

good luck!!! =-)

My nails have become so brittle?

My whole life my fingernails have been fine and i have even been able to wear them long with little problem with them breaking. NOW all of a sudden my nails have become brittle and i get cracks in them (to far down to cut so i have to wait till they grow out and they get snagged on everything (hair, clothing, etc...)). Also when i cut them (i use nail clippers not scissors), they seem really brittle and more or less shatter rather than make a nice edge....i'm getting really worried cause i know that dietary deficentcies can cause nail problems but i dont know what to do to fix it! I HAVE been sick for about 2 years now and not eating very well. I might go to the dr about it, but i thought i'd see if there were recommendations here first. Anyone know what kind of supplements might help brittle nails? Thanks! My nails have become so brittle?
Go to your doctor and get a thyroid test done.My nails have become so brittle?
Take biotin, it's over the counter in the vitamin and supplements department of your drug store. It will take a month or 2 for you to see the difference but it really works.

Vets give this to horses to stop their hooves from cracking but of course in much higher doses.
organic herbs

Dry and brittle nails are associated with iron and zinc deficiency. White spots over your nails may also be due to zinc deficiency. Vitamin C helps the body to absorb iron from plant foods, hence its intake is also necessary. Diet containing foods rich in vitamin C and zinc are equally important in treating fungal infections as well, as both of them improve your immunity level immensely. Optimum quantity of selenium (i.e. foods rich in selenium but not too much of it as it can blacken your nails) are required to avoid formation of ridges or wide bands on the nails. Probiotics 鈥?good bacteria, will help your body to get rid of the fungus and help maintain gastrointestinal and immune health. Omega-3 fatty acids are very effective anti-inflammatories and do a good job if your infection has created soreness around the nails.

Herbal and homeopathic remedies can be a gentle alternative to effectively make brittle nails strong and treat nail fungal infections. Melaleuca laterifolia, also known as Tea Tree Oil has excellent anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and healing properties. The essential oil of sweet-smelling Lavendula officinalis (Lavender) may also be used as it contains active ingredients to soothe the nail, while promoting healthy nail growth.

Other herbs such as Cymbopogon citrates (Lemon Grass) are especially helpful for fungal infections while Syzygium aromaticum (Clove Oil)is considered an excellent antifungal and antibiotic essential oil. These natural ingredients may be used directly on the affected area to target the fungal infection on the spot. There are also herbs which can be taken internally for their anti-fungal and immune boosting properties. These include Pau d鈥橝rco and Calendula officinalis.

I hava fake nails, and of course my real nails are growing, but how come they seem to be brittle underneath?..

I thought the acrylic helped by keeping my nails healthier and strong. What can I do about it? I go every 2 weeks to get fill ins and clean my nails and all that....I hava fake nails, and of course my real nails are growing, but how come they seem to be brittle underneath?..
Who told you that fake nails would be good for your real nails? The manicurist? Hmmmmmmm.........

As a matter of fact, acrylics are not good for your real nails because they do not let your nails ';breathe.'; And when you get them taken off, layers of your real nail will end up coming off with it too because they have to scrape off the residue and your own nail will be injured in that process.

You can get your own nails healthy with good nutrition and and a good quality multivitamin. If you have some problem, like ridges or spooning, then that indicates some deficiency that needs to be addressed!

If you still insist on an artificial nail, try a silk wrap. It lets more air in to your nailbed.I hava fake nails, and of course my real nails are growing, but how come they seem to be brittle underneath?..
I didn't find anything on the internet explaining why your nails might be brittle, but I did find this information which you should definitely be aware of.

http://www.beautyweb.com/consumer_alert_鈥?/a>
they're brittle because they're not ';breathing';. Believe me when you have acrylics you need to take a break from them every few weeks to let them get stronger
Have them put on a nail hardner. I really think your nails are weak from the constant glueing an unglueing of the fake nails.
Your nails are brittle due to the chemicals you put on them. Nail polish, nail polish remover, glue, etc. This stuff spreads to your nail matrix. Your diet might also play a role.

It's funny to me that women commonly call men liars, but then they:

- fake their nail length

- cover themselves with makeup

- wear high heels to fake being taller

- wear push up bras to fake having bigger breats

- wear girdles and ';control panties'; to fake being lighter or more shapely

Amazing.

If this is the best answer, please rate it as the best answer. Thanks!
fake nails suck they make the real nails weak. take them off and let ur real nails breathe. then put some nail polish on it and believe me they will grow.
your nails cannot breathe its a like everything it needs time off--as in no false nails. water can go under and fungas grows
ask them to put a nail strengthener base on your nails next time you have a fill in
I know lots of ladies that have that same problem. seems those chemicals on nails does major damage.... at least that is what it seems to me.

definitely worth the money

gemma, xxxI stopped biting my nails bout 5 weeks ago and they aint grown, there really brittle. how can i get them long?
it'll take a while before your nails will start growing long again provided you don't ';bite'; into temptation ;-)

apply a top coat or varnish to help them grow strong.

also massage with good hand %26amp; nail lotion or moisturiser or oil at least twice a day.

And include lots of clacium-rich foods in your diet such as milk, cashewnuts, etc. along with fresh green leafy vegetables.

all the best ...

I stopped biting my nails bout 5 weeks ago and they aint grown, there really brittle. how can i get them long?
I had the same problem. It takes about a mounth and a hlaf to get them healthy but you can start by filing them daily....dont clip. And dip them in olive oil 1 time a day! It is a slow process.... but it workes. Also... try getting a lotion for strong hands and nails! I have it and it really works!
Ok. Once a week, before you go to bed, rub some vinegar on them. It should help a lot. If you want white teeth, brush with vinegar too!
well, theyll need a chance to heal, they will stop being brittle, but u need to keep not bitin them

  • My nails keep breaking?! so soft and brittle?! help please?

i can actually bend them, i would love to have long nails but i cant because they keep breaking.

i have to wear false nails all the time,

any products you can use on your nails?

or any foods that will make them stronger and harder? My nails keep breaking?! so soft and brittle?! help please?
Use gloves when washing dishes or using harsh chemicals. This will keep the nail bed from getting too wet and causing the nail to become weak. If you are not able to use gloves, minimize the amount of time the nails are wet and dry them immediately after they have been exposed to water for long periods of time.

Massage vitamin E oil into the cuticles every night before going to bed. This oil will absorb directly into the skin and the cuticle bed. Over time, the oil will make fingernails stronger.

Apply a thin coat of clear nail hardener over fingernails at least twice a day to help make the fingernails stronger. Do this for seven days consecutively, then remove the hardener and reapply a thin coat again, starting with day number one.

Implement the use of the nail biting medicine Thum to discourage the behavior. You can find this medicine in a local pharmacy or online. Reviews have shown that this medicine has proved to be successful in helping people to stop nail biting and chewing.

Drink milk or take calcium tablets daily to help the body in making the nails stronger. Even a multivitamin with a significant dose of calcium is beneficial in the effort to make fingernails stronger. My nails keep breaking?! so soft and brittle?! help please?
it means that you are not getting enough fat in your diet. so make sure you are eating meats and protein.

and dont wear false nails! that is also the reason why your nails are soft and brittle. the glue on the false nails is ripping them. and when you wear nail polish all the time, this makes your nails soft and brittle. so take the false nails off and let your nails heal for a couple of months.
the sally hansen thing works but you have to apply it every other day, which i got annoyed with so i googled a few ways a few years ago (had the same problem ;) just rub in some conditioner onto your nails, try drinking more milk, or even to tapping your nails helps them grow faster or you could pick up a supplement idk the vitamin name but theres a certain vitamin you can buy and it helps your nails grow really fast and your hair too
    Hey!

My Nails Used To Do That All The Time.

But Then I Started Drinking And Eating Things That Had More Calcium In Them, Even Though I Dont Like Milk Much, I Tried To Have A Milkshake Everyday Or Two Days, I Also Started To Put On Rimmel's Clear 60 Second Nail Polish Everyday. And My Nails Stay Strong And Don't Break At All Now. Also Its Good Because I Can't Wear Nail Varnish For School So It's Great For Me. :D

    I Hope This Helps

    Good Luck!

I have acyrlic nails on...what can i put on my real nails to keep them from being brittle and breaking?

While you are wearing acrylic nails, there is nothing you can do to help them from being brittle. Just make sure when you are ready to remove the nails, soak them in pure acetone for about 15 to 20 minutes, between time every 5 to 6 minutes rub off the dissolve acrylic.

By carefully soaking them off, helps your nails to maintain it's natural nail bed surface level.....

I hope this helps... Take CareI have acyrlic nails on...what can i put on my real nails to keep them from being brittle and breaking?
I think you can buy a type of clear nail polish that has vitamins and stuff in it for your nails to strengthen them. Mine's Sally Hansen. My nails are too brittle.how to keep them strong?

Gelatin is supposed to make nails strong. So having jelly or emptied out gelatin capsules would help. Actually you probably should have multi-vitamins in gelatin capsules. As hair and nails are really barometers for your general health, make sure your are healthy otherwise. Exercise keeps the blood circulating to the extremities, so thats another thing to do.My nails are too brittle.how to keep them strong?
Buy a nail strengthener and apply each day and drink milk, it not only keeps your bones strong but your nails too!My nails are too brittle.how to keep them strong?
Aside from the usual drugstore stuff....eating jello will most definately make your nails stronger! Sounds crazy but believe me it really works! Of course that's if you like the stuff. :)
    eat raisins, no joke.
Use a nail conditioner like NutraNail and use handcream. Vaseline used to have a hand-and-nail formula. I don't know if they still have it, but any hand cream is likely to help. If you can't find NutraNail there's probably another nail conditioner in the nail aisle of any drug store.

Both of the above help because they soften the nails a little.

Also, it may help to use non-acetone nail polish remover (one with conditioner in it if possible). Even with that, though, wash your hands immediately after using polish remover.
When nails are brittle, it shows the deficiency of calcium. Take calcium tablets and food containing calcium
Calcium deficiency is the culprit. Eat food stuff containing calcium. Always rub your nails with petroleum jelly before going to bed, and clean nails with lemon rind whenever possible.Avoid low quality nail enamels/ paints.
Keep your finger tips i.e.. your nail area in hot water with a pinch of salt mixed in it. Keep it for 10 minutes every day.
cut out ur all finger and ur nails will look beautifull
use olive oil to ur nails. apply the oil every day before u go to sleep or when u r not using ur hands for some work.
The answer is simple. You should eat better and more nutritious foods. The lack of these healthy foods is the cause of brittle nails. An apple a day will keep those white spots away.

    Brittle nails!?

My nails always grew beautifully up until about 2/3 months ago, Now i cant grow them they are flaky soft and appear to grow with layers on the top. I recently had a small piece of alopecia on my head which has since grown back is this connected? Is there something wrong or does this happen sometimes?Brittle nails!?
Hair and nails are made of the same substance, so it makes perfect sense that your brittle nails is associated with your alopecia. I've always had brittle, flaky nails, much to my disgust. All I can suggest is that you always wear rubber gloves when you put your hands in water, and keep some hand cream beside the bathroom sink and use it every time you wash your hands, making sure you rub a little into your nails. There are a million products available all promising to strengthen nails, but in my experience they don't really work. My suggestion would be that you just keep your nails trimmed and moisturised until they go back to their former glory. some nail polishes look cute on shorter nails, so maybe go for that look in the meantime?

    Good luck :-)Brittle nails!?
alopecia can affect this try some skin hair and nails tablets from holland and barrett
    Lacking calcium
Ask to be referred to a dermatologist and in the meantime use Solar Oil from Creative.

Try www.salongeek.co.uk for more indepth answers - you can ask some real ';Nail Experts'; their advice - good luck with it x
keep your nails short. put on nail strengthener or a top coat. eat more soya.

possible, see a doctor... as from our nails, it will show if our body is healthy...
barielle cream is supposed to help strength nails.

but i would also check out your general health since you had the alopecia problem.
If this does'nt clear up with over the counter remedies, I would go to the Doc's, as you may have a fungal infection
The nail problem sounds more like a fungal infection if soft and flaky layers. There are products from the chemist your Phamacist can advise or if very bad your doctor can try antibiotics. The alopecia was probably due to stress and as the hair grew back nothing to worry about now. Treat your hair gently use a real bristle brush instead of nylon or plastic, never brush when wet ,limit heat sources use such as hairdyers. Have a good diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, try to keep your hands out of water and protect with a little barrier cream. Sunlight can help with new nail growth also HAIR NAILS SKIN suplements.
Watch your diet - cut down sugar and get more vitamins. Try Sally Hansen treatment for ageing nails. It comes in a pink bottle - saved mine.

Why are my nails so brittle?

it could be a number of reasons.

take care of them, give yourself a manicure every week, file from side to middle (on each side) never go back and forth, this will make them more brittle. use a good buffer and buffing cream and buff the top of your nails, this helps get rid of ridges and stimulates blood flow! (you can do this more often)

if i where you i would invest in a good nail strengthner, the best is opi, also its the most expensive, but it really is good! you can use it daily.

file the edges and leave them in the sun so that they can absorb vitamin D

  • Nails are very brittle.?

If they get to a certain length, they tear. Any suggestions?Nails are very brittle.?
Exposure to water (frequent hand washing, doing dishes, etc.) will dry out nails and cause brittleness (peeling, breaking, splitting). The water rinses away natural oils and the nail absorbs some water causing the nail layers to expand. As the water evaporates, the nail layers contract leading to peeling, etc. (like paint exposed to the elements)

My nails used to peel constantly so I stopped using a nail clipper and only use a nail file to shape and shorten them. I also started protecting my nails with thicker moisturizers.

I read somewhere that nail clippers can cause the layers of the nail to separate and filing is the best way to go.

I started with Revlon's disposable files made for weak nails. File in one direction only. Start on one side and file towards the middle, then go to the other side and file towards the middle of your nail. Smooth the nail into a squoval that mirrors you cuticle or the shape of the white part of your nail bed.

Finish the edges of the nail with a hindo stone, a smooth ceramic/stone nail file or the finest grit nail file you can find. You want to make the edges really smooth.

Revlon makes a tool that should work. It is a pink half moon shape and you can run it under/across the nail from side to middle.

(I have an old hindo stone but haven't been able to find a replacement at a local store. The Revlon tool might be easier for you to find.)

Also, avoid using metal nail files. I recommend using disposable nail files and changing them frequently. The fresher the grit, the less the drag which leads to tearing and peeling.

Some people swear by glass nail files but they can shatter if dropped.

I also use a cuticle balm or nail oil to moisturize my nails and protect them from water since I wash my hands frequently.

    (ex. Solar Oil, OPI Avoplex)

Vit E oil, jojoba oil, Aquaphor Healing Ointment, Vaseline or plain Chapstick will work too.

Avoid products w/ formaldehyde or toluene, they are very hard on nails.Nails are very brittle.?
Mine have the same problem. Make sure you take a calcium supplement, plus biotin. They'll strengthen your nails AND your hair.

Also, if you're not into the supplements, use Nailtiques. It's a protein-building type polish that makes your nails MUCH stronger. You can find it at any drug store. It's pricy, but for strong nails, it's worth EVERY penny!
NYC nail hardener is very cheap (a dollar) and quite effective.
soak ur nails in olive oil..this works...makes them strong and helps them grow
Vitamins and a good quality nail streghthener. Tip: when you file them, file the nail only one way, not back and forth (it open it up and creates tears in the nail) Hope this helps

I had fake nails now they are brittle?

is there any thing i can do i even soaked the fake nails off and they were still messed up can i fix it....I had fake nails now they are brittle?
your real nails will eventually become stronger. the nail that was covered with acrylic will eventually grow out and then the new nail will be much stronger.I had fake nails now they are brittle?
The fake nails (i'm assuming acrylics) has weakened your natural nails. the only thing to do is drink a lot of milk, take multi-vitamins and wait for them to grow out. I wore acrylics for years because I had no natural nails, but since I've stopped wearing them my natural nails grow much better. It does take time, though, and they will break alot in the meantime.
Just use hardening clear nailpolish and wait for them to grow out. I always have this problem when I get my nails done and then decide to take them off
    get them professionally off.

    Brittle, peeling nails??

When I was little I had always struggled with my nail biting problem. When I was about 11 I finally broke the habit! But now my nails seem more unhealthy then ever. I'll paint my nails and spend a lot of time on them, but then few hours later my nails start peeling super bad again and I'm left with barley any color. Sometimes the top layer peels back all the way to the middle of the nail... it's gross. I've tried almost everything. I've tried putting a clear bottom coat and top coat on, I've tried hard as nails, I've buffed my nails, I have bought almost every cream there is, and I have recently bought a non-acetone nail polish remover but nothing seems to work. It's getting really annoying... what's the problem?Brittle, peeling nails??
You may have a vitamin A, C, or calcium deficiency. Consult your doctor before taking vitamin A though; taking too much of it can damage your liver.

My toe nails have gone yellow brittle and disfigured can any one help me ? :(

is there anything to numb the pain so i can pull it off as its loose as well or is there anything else to help me ?My toe nails have gone yellow brittle and disfigured can any one help me ? :(
Yuk! If it is just discolouring, then lemon juice will sort that out, but it sounds more important than that. If you pull it off, you will regret it-infection has a much higher chance of getting in and you won't be able to walk on it. (And it will hurt.)

Get yourself down the quack and they will see to it. Even if it just the nurse that is available, go and see them if your doc is busy. Whatever happens, don't pull it off-you'll regret it.My toe nails have gone yellow brittle and disfigured can any one help me ? :(
It sounds like a fungal nail infection. You can try tea-tree oil; but, it seems it has gone way beyond that if it is loose. The infection is really under the nail forcing it to come off. You should see a chiropodist or your GP to see how bad the infection is and to prescribe something appropriate.
sounds like you have a very bad fungal infection, go see your doctor.

I did read somewhere if you bath the nail in listerin the mouth wash that it clears the infection. As your toe already hurts I'd go to the doctor.
If I was you jordan w I would go and see your doctor. It sounds to me like you have a fungal nail infection. If you don't get it treated it will spread.
I think it is a fungus,go to the doctor, you might be able to buy something on your own but it might not work as fast.

You may need more calcium in your diet. Drink more milk, eat more cheese or if that is not an option find a calcium vitamin tablet that you can take...also try wearing Sally Hansen nail hardener. While you are building up the strength of your nails try to keep them short to avoid them breaking. Also, when washing up wear gloves as soapy water can wear nails down as well. n
You can take vitamins that strengthen your nails, or you could buy some Sally Hansen products. There's tons for strengthening and growth. Check out the website: http://www.sallyhansen.com/nail_treatmen鈥?/a>
Go to the chemist, they have tablets that strengthen your hair and nails. Its a vitamin, but i forgot what its called.
At one time (the 60s) it was thought that regular ingestion of geletin (a product called Serto mixed with water) would strengthen your fingernails (they featured this claim in their advertising), but later on this was found to be completely false. Recently they have been advertising a medicinal product for your problem. Your drugest can help you find it.

Go get a manicure and let them push your cutucles back and all that stuff. Then make sure you keep them clean, and manicured (by you or professional) every couple of weeks. Then also you can take more vitamins to help with the growth and if you are spiritual, pray for it! Oh and avoid getting acrylic nails- they totally break down your nail and take off too many layers!
    pray
..i heard that if you put on nail polish..it helps make you nail stronger.hope it helps
Cut them short and let them ';start over'; and grow out.
Drink alot of milk, or if you don't like milk take calcium. and also there is nail hardening polish

What can I do if my nails are brittle and splitting?

I always had thin nails, but lately, for the past month, my nails have been especially dry and weak. Every nail is splitting!

I've heard about lack of HCL is a cause, and I'm starting to get nervous. Is it my diet?Brittle, Splitting Nails?
Some health problems can cause brittle, weak nails....The most common is Hypothyroidism. Mention it to your doctor and see what he thinks. If there is no health issue associated with it, you can buy a product called NailTech sold at any nail salon for about $7 that works really great. Good Luck.Brittle, Splitting Nails?
You have a lack of Vitamin E in your diet. Smart for Life has a Hair Skin and Nails formula that can help with this. Also, Vitamin E, is liquid capsule form is the best thing that you can do along with Sally Henson Nail Strengthener is recommended.
It could be your diet, but I really don't know.

Try taking Gelatin, it comes in powder and I believe tablets, that should help strengthen your nails. Keep polish on them, start with clear.

you probably lack calcium. try a supplement if you dont have enough calcium in your diet.
well my grandmas are like that b/c they are not healthy and you need to soak them in the bath with bakingsoda
you need more calcium in your diet. this can be obtained in the form of a tablet
my better half says eat jelly probably one of grandmas remedies which most of them did work.
I saw improvement in my nails when I began using Citracal Creamy Bites. It is a calcium product that combines Vitamin D. The Lemon flavor is delicious.
I had this problem!! I read this in a women's magazine - family circle or woman's day - and it works great (its also cheap).

Get some triple antibiotic ointment - generic works fine. Rub this into your nails several times a day and let it soak in. You will notice a change in your nails in a week or so - and, bonus, no more hang nails!

I don't know why this works, but now I have to trim my nails to type because they grow so long. Before, I could never get them to grow.

My dogs nails seem dry, brittle and are peeling, any reason why??

not enough nutrition... :)My dogs nails seem dry, brittle and are peeling, any reason why??
The answer to this question depends on exactly what is happening with

    the nails.

If you are seeing dry nails that crumble easily when they are trimmed,

but are not sloughing off, not causing pain or other discernible problems,

then there are lots of anecdotal recommendations for treatment. I am not

aware of any studies that show that any of these things actually work, but

    anecdotally they are recommended:

Gelatin administration is a common recommendation for treatment of

brittle nails. I have seen a fairly wide range of recommendations for the

amount of gelatin to give. For an 85 lbs. dog the total dosages would be 2 to 5

packages per day (Knox Gelatin (tm) is the most commonly recommended

brand name). I suspect that this is rarely helpful but haven't seen any

    reports of it being harmful.

Some sources recommend supplementing biotin when nails are brittle. I

can't recall whether I have seen a study in dogs but I know that in horses

there have been studies that haven't shown much benefit for hoof care, which

should be similar. The recommended dosage is around 5mg/kg (about 200mg

for your dog) of biotin per day, if you want to try this.

Zinc supplementation helps in some dogs. The usual dosage is zinc

gluconate 5mg/kg daily. This probably only works when there is a zinc deficiency,

although some dogs just seem to need more zinc. I don't think of this

as a really common problem but we have seen at least a couple of cases of

zinc deficiency in our practice over the years.

The best bet is probably to supplement with omega n3 fatty acids. This

is usually done using fish oil (3V Capsules tm) and giving 180mg/10lbs of

body weight per day, which is a pretty high dosage. For just dry nails a

lower dosage might be helpful but for the condition discussed next you would

    need the higher dosage.

If the nails are actually cracking back to the nail bed, if they are

falling off or if they are deformed, it is likely that there is a

medical cause for the problem. The most likely cause would be lupoid

onchodystrophy, followed by food allergies or other allergies,

ringworm, bacterial infections and immune mediated diseases. Except for the

ringworm and bacterial infections all of these conditions might respond to the

high end dosages of 3V Capsules. It is likely that your vet can give you

some idea of the possibility of an infectious cause following an

examination. My dogs nails seem dry, brittle and are peeling, any reason why??
    poor nutrition

I have raynauds syndrome, so my nails are very thin, dry and brittle. Can I wear gel or acrylic nails safely?

With thin nails it might be pretty bad for you to get ';fake'; nails. When having to prepare your nail for the application, they have to ';sand'; off the top layer of your nail. This might cause more damage to you. Proclien nails might be better for your nails. I am not sure how they apply those, but I do know they are quite a bit more. But they look so much better!I have raynauds syndrome, so my nails are very thin, dry and brittle. Can I wear gel or acrylic nails safely?
Not sure about actually having a nail put on, but you can have liquid acrylic painted onto your nails. This is easily taken off, and should not damage your nails. Have you tried painting your nails with clear nail polish? There are some that actually strengthen your nails, not sure about how your desease works, but hey it's worth a try.I have raynauds syndrome, so my nails are very thin, dry and brittle. shouldnt you get a specialist doctor 2 reafer?

What is the reason for nails becoming brittle?

Nail and hair health are good indicators of overall health. If you are not eating a well balanced diet, it will show in your nails being brittle. Using acetone can also strip off moisture from nails, and sometimes, when you have hormonal imbalances (thyroid problems for example) they will turn brittle.

Start by checking what you eat. Have a supplement that has vitamin E in it and Flaxseed extract. Moisturize your hands every night, cuticles included.

If you don't see a change in 4 weeks, go to your doctor. What is the reason for nails becoming brittle?
.What is the reason for nails becoming brittle?
It could have to do with weather, or water like washing hands allot, or even diet and hereditary factors.

Water acts like a drying agent and can crack and peel you nails making them brittle. You should use a sealant or a top coat before using a polish and they make polish for brittle nails, and to make them stronger. I like Sally Hansens nail products.

Finger skin cracks, nails are brittle, peeling, air bubbles..?

For about half a year now My fingers have been really dry, my nails are brittle, the skin around my fingers peel, the corners of my skin by the nail cracks, air bubbles form, dead skin forms under my nail and my nail is really bumpy. I been to the doctor twice already at walk ins and they didn't even take the time to look and listen and said it was eczyma. the first doc gave me hydrocortosome or something and it didn't work so a month later i went back to see a different doctor who said it was eczyma was well and gave me a ';stronger form of hydrocortosome';. a month later it is still not better. I've used all types of lotions to try to get it to heal like aveeno and dry skin lotions. This morning i woke up with a bunch of air bubbles on my right finger that has a crack and i dont know what to do. the docs don't take their time to listen. what if its a fungus or infection? anyone heard of such thing?Finger skin cracks, nails are brittle, peeling, air bubbles..?

Help with my nails, extremely brittle?

I have terrible trouble with extremely brittle nails. I have extremely bad cuticles also. My nails seem to break and grow over each other in sort of layers, it's quite embarrassing and it looks simply awful. Can anyone give me advice? I use nail strengthener and I have never bitten my nails. I don't do a lot of hard work with my hands as I'm a schoolgirl. I don't file my nails as it makes them even more brittle and make them break, even though I only ever do it in one direction.

Can anyone help me?Help with my nails, extremely brittle?
i heard not to ever cut your nails after getting it wet because your nails soak up the moisture. so sudden cutting will make them grow brittle. so when cutting nails, make sure they're dry. but if u did get them wet, use some nail polish remover to get the moisture out. and as for filing, file in the same direction. so you can file one nail several times, just in one direction. try different nail strengtheners if you wish to but don't get to disapointed when it doesn't work. i dont know what other advice to give for i have a semi-similar problem as well. just try your best not to poke things with your nails and just be a little bit more careful. (thats what she said) haha. have a good one!!(:Help with my nails, extremely brittle?

I found that wearing alot of nail polish, really strengthens the nails...I went for years not wearing nail polish, because it does make the nails yellow, underneath, but, my nails never grew very long, and they broke easily.. So, I started to wearing it again, in spite of the yellowing..underneath.. no one can see this anyway.. And my gosh, my nails haven't grown this long, since I was pregnant with my kids!!! So, I highly recommend wearing nail polish, and when it wears down, freshen it up with some more, the thicker, the better!!! People, on this page are going to tell you to take prenatal vitamins, and I honestly think thats a bad idea, for women who are not pregnant!!! For some reason, they think anyone can take them!!! Not good, and their not doctors, so be careful, about that one!! Good-Luck, to you!!!

What can be the cause for my dogs brittle nails?

She is a six year old dachshund and her nails are as thin as a dime.It is thin where the quick should be but it all looks dead in the middle of her nail. She has broken a nail on every foot and she bleeds like crazy. She limps all the time and I have no clue what it can be. We took her to the vet and he said to give her omega 3 supplement and its been 4 months and so far nothing. She breaks her nails almost every other week. When she breaks/chips it, its on the inside between her paws so I can barely see it. I have no idea what it can be and the vet has no suggestions except to give her omega-3 supplements! What can be the cause for my dogs brittle nails?
Take her to a groomer %26amp; have them to cut her nails. She may need a little oil in her food. What can be the cause for my dogs brittle nails?
    what if she's pregnantttt =0
Has he ruled out a fungal condition? Or some metabolic problem? What kind of dog food do you feed her? Perhaps one higher in protein if it's cool with the vet. I wonder if you could massage some vegetable oil into her pads %26amp; nails to moisturize on the outside %26amp; if she licks them she'll injest a little which might even help it. Our vet had us give our old dog Safflower oil when he had dry itchy %26amp; flaky skin/fur with brittle nails. It helped him a lot. The massage will help the circulation. Check with the vet though. Another suggestion is that pet stores %26amp; online pet supply sites sell little booties just for dogs, should help protect her tender paws %26amp; make her more comfortable. Good luck.

I have lines down all my nails, they are soft and brittle, I cant grow them at all.?

My friends say it is because of my diet. I am vegan and don't have a very good diet at all. I am in my 30's and this has always been my diet. I drink water and black tea (no milk) dont eat cheese or any dairy produce mainly fruit and a few vegatables. No beans or pulses nothing like that.I have lines down all my nails, they are soft and brittle, I cant grow them at all.?
Your killing yourself sweetheartI have lines down all my nails, they are soft and brittle, I cant grow them at all.?
Calcium hardly affects your nails at all, it does work on your bones and teeth. Diet - not the problem in my opinion. Brittle nails are usually caused by exposure to harsh soaps, irritants, polish remover and the wetting and drying of nails. Also fungal infections, psoriasis (thought to be genetic) and a lack of IODINE which can cause thyroid problems (explaining the nails) can be the cause. Check yourself for all these problems before jumping to the 'diet' conclusion. However, i think you have a poor diet regardless.
You should really work over your diet. Lines on nails and brittle nails are a big sign of nutrient deficiency and malnutrition. Get your blood checked at the doctor. He will then prescribe you some vitamins and minerals at first. But that is just to counter the acute deficiency. You have to add more nutrients to your diet. Being vegan doesn't necessarily mean to become malnurished. You just have to be more careful to get all the nutrients you need. But act now, because in the long run you will hurt your body by depriving it .
the reason why you are getting these soft nails is lack of protien... understandably if you are a vegan. I strongly suggest eatting nuts or pulses, these contain protien if you dont want animal products. Also try getting a strgnthing solution for your nails, you can get them as nail varnish is you want, but these will made them healthier and much better.
bruv you need calcium! thats why your bones and nails are going to sh*t

soya milk and calcium supplements are essential if you're a vegan
Its probably because of the lack of calcium in your diet. You can buy special nail varnish that will help with this. I think Sally Hansen does a good one for brittle nails.
calcium and iron are lacking in your diet

as your a vegan you need supplements to boost these, if your nails are like that I'd hate to think what your bone structure is like
You have to change your diet and eat peas, lentil, and other green vegetables.
Get false nails, they are cheap %26amp; they look good as long as you care for them properly! [=

What is causing my brittle nails and hair loss?

Today when I was brushing my hair I noticed several strands of hair came out. Then, I trimmed my nails and many of them split and cracked while I was cutting them. What could this be caused by? I am recovering from the flu. For about 3 days I ate very, very little, but I have eaten a pretty balanced diet today and yesterday. Is this because of the flu and my lack of nutrition over the past few days, or should I be worried? What is causing my brittle nails and hair loss?
It is normal to lose up to 200 strands (some people more) of hair per day. Do you have other symptoms? Like bowel irregularities, fatigue, hot/cold intolerance? If so, you may need to have your thyroid level checked. If not, then your nails may just be suffering the drying effects of winter. Ask you doctor if you are concerned.

Best of luckWhat is causing my brittle nails and hair loss?
Have you been throwing up a lot? Usually people with eating disorders like bulimia or anorexia have hair loss and brittle nails. If you've been sick lately, I wouldn't worry about it, just make sure to take plenty of vitamins and eat a healthy diet in the future.
you probably just haven't eaten enough for the past couple of days. Getting back to your natural diet should help. I hope you feel better and know that if it continues it maybe something else. I wouldn't worry too much tho.
you can buy gelatin tablets that help your nails get stronger- they are in drugstores, or walmart- everywhere.

Help with dry, hard, brittle nails!?

I have this problem on my toenails, and to a much lesser extent, my fingernails.

You can see vertical lines running down them (and in the case of my toenails, also horizontal ones). They never used to be like this. I used nail polish remover like once, 4 or so years ago, and my nails have never been the same since.

While my fingernails look generally healthy, and translucent, my toenails are so thick they are nearly opaque from all the lines running up and across them. Grosss.

can u guys give me any ';HOME MADE';way to solve these problems?

n i did specify ';HOME MADE'; didnt i??? i dnt want any salley cosmetics too...I have stopped biting my nails but my nails are vry brittle, transparent and weak?
buy olive oil and massage your nails with a drop for each nail. once in the morning and once at bedtime. during the day if you hv time you can massage a drop of oil and then stema the nails for sometime. you will notice the change very soon.I have stopped biting my nails but my nails are vry brittle, transparent and weak?
If you have plants then just play with the sand that your plant is in a couple of times a day. The soil makes your nails harder. Then you can also soak your hands in hot water with a little lemon juice in once a week.
Get prenatal multi vitamins. And your problem will be the total opposite. Too hard, strong and growing as if there is no tomorrow. They are cheap cheap at the clinic. Also very good for hair.

    Peace.

I use Sally Hansen nailgrowth nail polish. And the one you mentioned is good, too.

If I were you I wouldn't use colored polish on my nails until they are strong. Try applying the growth polish stuff every day..
If you go to any drug store, they have nail hardener. It strenthens your nail and makes it look cute bcz it has a glossy finish. I use it and my nails hardly ever break. Hope this hellped

Peeling, Brittle, Nails, and Cracking Skin?

I'm trying to find some info for my mom. Recently her nails have become very brittle and they are peeling. You can actually peel the top layer off.

Also she gets huge cracks in the skin around the nail tip, on each side of the nail.

The Dr. says that it's no fungus or anything like that. She has tried everything we can think of - cremes, lotions, oils, and expensive nail polishes (OPI Nail Strengthener).

If anyone has ideas on how to help the peeling nails, and especially how to help the Cracked skin around the nail, please answer.

ThanksPeeling, Brittle, Nails, and Cracking Skin?
From the symptoms that you have listed I would suspect a nutritional deficiency OR for some reason nutrients are be ill-absorbed in her body due to some medical condition.

First, I would exam her diet - is it adequate?, has she recently went on any fad diets that could be the culprit?, Is she taking a daily multi-vitamin?

Second, I would suggest that she go back to the doctor for a blood test that includes a vitamin %26amp; mineral check. They will test for the levels of nutrients in her body - Biotin, all of the B-vitamins, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids all play a vital role in repair of skin/hair/nail growth %26amp; tissue.

If the symptoms persist it would be wise to see another doctor for a second opinion..Peeling, Brittle, Nails, and Cracking Skin?
First treat the cracks with something like Neosporin. Once everything has healed try a medicated lotion at night with some gloves and sleep that way. Burt's Bees makes some good stuff.
Try this its fantastic,it works like magic(with me).my skin is totally renewed my hands are soft and my nails look healthy and the skin around the nails has stopped pealing,i cant promise you anything though cause different people react differently with different treatments, but try it anywys its called super dew luscious hydrating massage cream with anti aging sepilift complex.goodluck with your mom.
I think your mom is suffering from lack of calcuim. Why don't you get that checked? Surface creams and lotions are just temporary. The real problem is from the inside. Get that checked and see if her calcuim levels are okay. You did not mention how old your Mom is? Women have a tendency to deplete calcuim from their body. Many factors can also affect the calcium absorption in the body. Avoid the local off the shelf creams and consult your doctor or a skin specialist. Don't ignore this.
Its winter, that was just the case of some dry skin that got worse. You should go in to get your self an oil manicure first step, there about 10 bucks but worth it! that should soften you up, but alway lotion every time you even wash your hands!
This what i use for cracked skin- Cuticle oil

My mom uses - Nutragena instant nail enhancer- for her nails
I have this same problem. For the nails I added a calcium suppliment to my diet (I'm lactose intolerant so I can't drink mild and such), this helped majorly with the peeling and brittle nails.

For the dry cracking skin which is a major issue for me since I have to use latex gloves many times throughout the day along with alcohol based hand sanitizers which dry skin out badly, I started using Curel Continuous Comfort many times throughout the day even though it is a 24 hour lotion. This has helped drastically with the appearance and feel of my hands, so much so that I started using it as an all over lotion.

My finger nails are brittle, and peel easily. can anyone help! PLZ!?

please help! i was thinking this was that iron thing.

OH! they are also very thin! not strong like most nails, and are turning orange.

idk if that helps! PLZ help me!My finger nails are brittle, and peel easily. can anyone help! PLZ!?
My mum is a quallified nail tech and i have also studied it. you should put clear nail varnish on you nails everynight to keep them strong and use rubber gloves while washing the pots and dont keep them in water for long as that makes them more softer....

    hope that helps

Foot nail fungus can be extremely embarrassing. The fungus makes beautiful nails turn into yellow, brittle and ugly toenails. However, you can maintain the beauty and health of your toenails with these 4 easy preventative tips!

Preventative Tip #1 - Keep Your Feet Clean and Dry

When your feet stay dirty or damp, it increases the risk that you will develop a nail fungus infection. Inside your socks, where it stays moist, warm and damp - fungus will invade and flourish in that type of environment. By keeping your socks clean, dry and fresh, you will prevent foot nail fungus from taking over.

Use a nail brush to clean under your toenails regularly. This will keep them clean so that there is no attraction for the nail fungus. Also, be very careful when you're trimming your toe nails. A tiny cut, even if you don't feel it, will provide an entry point for foot nail fungus to invade. If you do accidentally cut your skin, clean it immediately with alcohol and use an antibiotic ointment. Covering it with a bandage may seem like overkill, but it will help keep fungus from entering the cut.

Preventative Tip #2 - Shoes On and Shoes Off

It's important that you keep your shoes on when you are in public places - even if (or especially) if everyone else is going barefoot. If someone else has a foot nail fungus problem, there is a chance you can pick it up by going barefoot. This includes places like the showers at the pool, the gym and anywhere that other people walk regularly. This will keep your toenails healthy and safe.

When you're at home, you can take your socks and shoes off and allow your feet and toenails to breathe. Go barefoot or wear cozy slippers with no toe covers. This allows the air to get to your feet and toenails and reduces the moisture by your feet. Together, these things will help you prevent foot nail fungus.

Preventative Tip #3 - Extracts and Oils

Some plant extracts and oils are known to reduce foot nail fungus that plagues you. You can prevent this fungus by using natural oils and extracts like Jojoba oil, Tea Tree oil and Vitamin E oil which are all health supportive for your toenails. Simply rub the oils on your toenails one to three times a day and allow your toenails and skin to absorb the oils.

This will help you prevent foot nail fungus from taking over and turning your beautiful nails into yellow, brittle and ugly nails.

When you use these three preventative tips, you can keep your toenails healthy and beautiful. Hope this helps!

My nails have always been thin and brittle. what's a good remedy to harden them.?

my nails have always been thin and brittle. what's a good remedy to harden them.My nails have always been thin and brittle. what's a good remedy to harden them.?
My nails used to be like this. My grandma told me to rub a little bit of good Olive Oil on them at night and morning. It really works! Also, when you give yourself a manicure you can warm up the Olive Oil and rub it into your fingers and nails and cuticles for a nice treat. One other thing, wear gloves when you do dishes or clean. Less moisture and chemicals will make them stronger. And believe it or not, nail polish will actually make your nails weaker because they aren't able to breathe! so instead of clear nail polish, get one of those sued/leather buffers and some buffing cream and ask a nail salon (or beauty supply store where you can buy it) how to use it. Its really easy and looks better and lasts longer! My nails are so strong and nice now!My nails have always been thin and brittle. what's a good remedy to harden them.?
go to the pharmacy and get vitamin b12 pills ,gelatin capsules , and oyster shell vitamins..... strengthen from the inside out.... these pills are not expensive either
i heard olive oil is good for your nails...just apply olive oil before you use your nail polish
calcium, and sallys hard as nails.
eat food rich with Vitamin E..
';Sally Hansen nail growth miracle';. you gotta keep the same on for 2 weeks consecutive. do not remove during this period. if it chips away, apply more. it works! it worked on me!
almond oil and eat 6 almonds a day
    use hand and nail cream.

if u live in UK, there's an ASDA brand one in asda and is only 49p -- offer -- and its better than the one i buy for 拢8

Sally Huessen has a clear nail polish called Hard as Nails, found in any drug store, that lengthens and strenthens your nails for about $3 thats works very, very well!!!!
Soak your nails in a bowl of warm olive oil for 15 minutes, wash and dry them, and add a coat of clear strengthening nail polish.
    use nail polish strength!

  • I have brittle nails!?

Hi! I have brittle nails, and the are really annoying. I do file my nails, and all! How can I get my nails not to be brittle, because I am trying to grow them a little! Oh and I really don't want to buy any products! Thanks :)I have brittle nails!?
I know what you mean, products are so expensive.

Yeah a healthy diet is always good, I've always been told eating Jelly/Jello strengthens the nails. Do you use a metal file? They can cause the nail to become brittle and split, I would advise using an emery board and always file in the same direction to reduce splitting.

Another reason nails often go brittle is they dry out like skin does. After showering/bathing rub baby oil into the nails to help them retain moisture and you'll find they will look much more nourished.I have brittle nails!?
You need more calcuim so just drink more milk and also if you nail are in water alot that can break it down alot. ALo make sure your getting a proper amount of vitamins because if you don't they will break very easily. Hope they get better!
ugh mine toooo they just flaked off some right nowwww x[

i don't know of any product, but painting your nails helps me some, it makes them stronger and helps them grow, just make sure to repaint them before the polish starts coming off.
Take a Vitamin E supplement three times a week, drink more water, and only file your nails in one direction (not back and forth).
Eat a Vitamin B pill daily. You can also buy a bottle of clear nail polish that will harden them, or at least keep them from flaking.
Either get a manicure (or pedicure, whichever) or have someone file your nails that can do a good job at it
    calcium. you need more calcium
i was the same:). just dont file them and dont use nail varnish and leave it on for ages. and dont bite them!!!!

dont fiddle with them dont tap on the table with them:)

    hope this helps
Have a more healthy diet and drink lots of water
just put clear nailpolish on them =) it WILL work....gauranteed
    eat more protein!

    Brittle nails............?

I've noticed lately that my nails are extremely uneven and brittle. At times parts of my nails begin to peel. I was wondering if anyone knows the cause of this?

    Thanks so much!Brittle nails............?
it could be either something in the water that you are washing your hands in, or it could be a sign of malnutrition. take some vitamins.

have you noticed any changes in your hair? could be the waterBrittle nails............?
It sounds as if you have ';onychoschizis';, which is peeling nails; it's the equivalent of split ends of hair. So, just as you'd treat the hair with a cream rinse conditioner, you should treat the nails with a mosturizer. You can get straight glycerin from your local pharmacist, and put that on the nails twice a day. And, try to limit anything that would dry out the nails, such as frequent washing of the hands, or exposure to solvents, such as nail polish remover.
i dont know what this is, but my nails peel as well, its probably from picking at them and stuff. i dont worry much about my nails but dont worry my nails are the same way!

    Brittle nails?

i think i may have dry or brittle nails because sometimes they seem like they are peeling away from the layers or chip easily. i read somewhere that this is due to the lack of vitamins in my diet. i think if i started to take a multi-vitamin it might help. does anyone know any vitamins that are good for nail growth and strength, or any treatments i can do?Brittle nails?
Brittle nails is a condition where the nails are fragile and break frequently.

It can be due to an infection or a nutritional disorder, but they can also be an indication of several other medical conditions, including Iron deficiency, anemia, and hypothyroidism.

Some solutions that have been proposed include vitamin supplements, gelatin, glucosamine, reducing the use of nail polish, and ensuring proper moisture.Brittle nails?
I have the same problem as you. I tried Hard As Nails and it actually works. It strengthened my nails and allowed them to grow. But you have to be consistent with applying the polish. I try to do it every weekend. I also know for a fact that prenatal vitamins make your hair and nails grow, but that's kind of drastic if you're not pregnant....but it works :)
well sweetie they say vitamine e makes your nails grow strong, but as a cosmatologist i say thats not true. sure vitamine e is important to yer diet, but it does not aid in the growth of you nails. first and formost, DO NOT BITE YOUR NAILS! this is the #1 cause of problems with cracking, chippin, slittin, breaking nails. besides all the bacteria under them, thats nasty, do you know you can get pin worms from bitting your nails? anyways my suggestion is that you get manicures regularly. every 2 weeks. if this is not an option for you, i would say go to your local beauty supply store(not wal-mart!) there are several different professional products just for growth and strength. its usually gonna be a clear polish that should be applied every day or two. these are usually called nail hardeners. and yes if you have a poor diet, this can effect your nails, hair, and skin. so eat yer veggies!

    Brittle nails?

my nails are really brittle, they snap really easily, and they peel from about half way up

any ideas on how to keep them strong?Brittle nails?
First start wearing rubber gloves for any water usage, if you have a long soak in the tub keep your hands out the water. Water causes the nails to swell, as they dry out they develop microscopic splits which causes the flaking. Also, start using cuticle oil, massaging it in around the cuticle and all over the nail. The massage increases blood flow to the matrix which encourages healthy growth while the oil itself waterproofs your nails a little. Brittle nails?
I take coral calcium as an extra calcium supplement to prevent osteoporosis when I am older. Since I have taken them for a few years now, I have noticed that it helps my nails grow faster and stronger. I also take a multi-vitamin. Try these, they may solve your problem. Also, as you are trying to grow your nails, keep a coat of polish on them to give them a little protection. Good Luck!
It's not all about what goes ON your nails, but what goes IN you!! Eating foods with healthy benefits for hair and nails will help you over all and give your skin a nice glow, too! You may not be getting enough of the right vitamins, minerals or iron. Try a vitamin supplement with B vitamins, E, and iron. Eating fish, leafy green veggies, lean protein and the like will help.

    Good luck!
My aunts nails are like this. Ever since she got a manicure her nails keep going flaky. So I think that if you have manicures you should cut down and cut them regularly so they're not really long. Also dont chew them to get dirt out underneath as this makes them thinner and easier to break.

    hope this helped. :]
Apply nail strengthener to them. Also wear a layer of clear nail polish on top of your nails - this will give them extra thickness. But usually brittle nails are down to a poor diet - so eat some healthy stuff! You can also take hair %26amp; nail supplement tablets which should help your hair and nails to grow strong. x
    Hi,

Brittle nails are due to lack of calcium in the body. Do your blood test and check if your body lacks calcium. Well, half the battle is when you follow a healthy diet. Good Internal nutrition reflects your skin and hair
Biotin is pretty good for nail health.

I've taken it and it's helped.

And there are different clear nail polish type things for brittle nails and to help the health of your nails.

Your diet is a big importance too. :)
I'v got the same prob. My nails peel, bend, and breakk soooooooooooooo easily. I tried Sally Hanson, green tea nail strenthener, and it helped ALOT!

    Hope I helped!! :)
Try OPI nail professional products called Nail envy.. or supernails used to do nail eat and nail drink for specific nail problems.. Look on QVC as they have good nail brands... x
    hi lucy,

i would say the best way to strengthen your nails would be to always wear clear nail varnish, hope this helps it did for me!
I agree with the calcium people. I'm taking calcium and my nails are growing like crazy!
Try Sally Hansen Brittle/ hard to grow-long nails with Green Tea in it! It helps!
wallmart has this nail strangth with green tea in it and it works very well

    Brittle Nails?

My nails are very brittle and very frail. Is there a type of nail treatment or some kind of nail polish that can help them go back to normal?Brittle Nails?
    I've had that problem before....

I used a form of nail polish that acted as a strengther, but there is also a product called ';Elon'; ( www.dermstore.com ), if you are looking for a solution to the problem.Brittle Nails?

if you eat jello 2 times a wk. you nails will become thicker

    there is also sally Hanson
sounds like you have a nutrient deficiency lady!

Either that or you have a hormonal problem.

Is your hair thin and brittle as well?

I would start supplementing and get some natural hormone

    replacement.
A well balanced diet is your best bet. Failing that a good multi vitamin
if it's brittle because of nail polishes and stuff, leave it alone for a month or two.

if it's just naturally brittle, put on nail strengtheners from drugstores. they're basically clear nail polish
In terms of a treatment, a product called ';Nailtiques'; is considered one of the top ';salon-quality'; products and Sally Hansen would be the best drug-store product. Stimulate nail growth by filing gently (do not file back and forth - only file in one direction at a time) and also by using a buffer if there is no polish on the nail.

Apply one of the above producte every other day and remove completely after 6 days (3 applications). and start over. Use a NON-ACETONE nail polish remover as this is less drying than a regular polish remover. The non-acetone is available in the same place regular removers are sold.

Finally, I also recommend eating gelaten, which strenghtens hair and nails. These days it comes in convenient containers already prepared!!
Silica, I hear, works wonders...a mineral you can purchase from your local health food store.

I really want to grow out my nails however, they are unbelievably brittle so i end up biting them...?

    3 questions

    1. what are some good, PRACTICAL ways to stop biting

    2. what can i take/put on to make my nails grow stronger

    3. does this mean i have low protein?I really want to grow out my nails however, they are unbelievably brittle so i end up biting them...?
    1. I bit my nails since I could chew, and Im 18 now and I dont anymore but I only recently stopped. My way of stopping was motivation - I was starting an holistic therapy course and I guessed no one would want a massage off a girl with horrible bitten nails on her hands, and all the other girls in my class had lovely long nails. So now I do - maybe you need to think of something in your life which would stop you biting. My mum always used to say to me ';no man will put a ring on your finger if with nails like that'; lol.

    2. Coconut milk hand cream by Inecto. Its the best thing in the world to make skin really really soft and nails so strong they wont break anymore.

    3. Im not sure about having low protein. I eat a lot of foods with protein in I always have so I dont think its got anything to do with that.I really want to grow out my nails however, they are unbelievably brittle so i end up biting them...?
Mine are the same...unfortunatly the more products you put on them the more brittle they get. I tried using strengthening nail polishes for years and then one day just stopped using them and now my nails are much lass brittle.

Keep a nail file with you so that if one does start to break then you can file it down which takes away the temptation to bite them.

Also take B Vitamins or the 'Hair, Skin and Nails' Vitamins and wear gloves when using household cleaning products.
there these special nail polish that makes them sytonger and longer. But you can just get tips ( fake nails) my friend gets them call the time and her nails grew and her habit stopped.

but there this thing that people sell you have to brush it on the top so when you put it in your mouth it would be so horrible tating whihc helps you stop.
hi, I have the bad habit of biting my nails...so I go in and get my nails done...full tips with a subtle color and shorter...if I get them too long and french tip style, I end up playing with them and they eventually get messed up... hope that helps...

Or if you can't afford it, keep them polished with clear protein building nail polish...the more you keep them manicured, the better you'll take care of them.
You can get special nail polish that you apply and it makes your nails grow stronger and taste terrible so when you go to bite them you learn not to as every time you go to do it you get a terrible taste in your mouth. You can pick it up at chemists and its rather cheap :)
This means you have low Calcium. So by drinking lots of milk and eating lots of foods high in calcium such as cheese will make your nails stronger. Chemists or pharmacies do a polish to put on your nails and it tastes disgusting so it stops you biting them! xx
Try and drink more milk - calcium will strengthen them

Buy a nail strengthener nail polish.

    Thin, Brittle Nails!! Help!?

I had fake nails on for the first time and I took them off yesterday, but now I have horrible nails. They're thin, brittle and have ridges on the surface. Does anyone know a good way I can rehydrate, nourish and strengthen my nails? My nails were never like this before.Thin, Brittle Nails!! Help!?
firstly file your nails then buy some nail strengtherner i reccomend sally hanson stuff its about $13 and it will stop brittleness and make them stronger and will rebuild the ridges on the surfaceThin, Brittle Nails!! Help!?
there is this great product called ';nutri-nail'; im sure you can find it at any dolar store, wal-mart or walgreens and u just put that on your nails everyday of the week on the surface and underneath the nails and they should grow back and look healthier.also use ';hard as nails'; nail hardener or clear polish so that your nails won't break while you're regrowing them. try to stay away from the fake nails- they do nothing but harm to the natural nail.
OPI have a brilliant range including nail strengtheners, it will take a while for the condition of your nails to improve. If they are already thin I wouldn't file the ridges until your nails are in better condition.
I have the same problem, or did- I've been using Nailtiques Formula 2 Nail Protein. It works great. My nails are not peeling fo like the first time in my life. I got it at Pure Beauty. You can probably get it at any salon or order online.
Go to the avon website, you can order from here, it isn't that expensive, and choose some nail strengthener, I use it and its really gd

Help! I have brittle nails :(?

I have very brittle nails! How can i help them grow thicker and stronger? Vitamins? Any nail products? How can I stop my habit of picking them?! Any help would be so appreciated!Help! I have brittle nails :(?
Keep them short at first so you can't pick or bite at them. Then pile on the dairy products for calcium! Drink lots and lots of milk and eat yoghurt and cheese and white bread. Calcium makes for strong, healthy nails.

Once a day, rub olive oil or lip balm onto your nails. This acts as cuticle oil and it'll make your nails healthier and shinier.Help! I have brittle nails :(?
sally Hansen makes a great clear polish called tough as nails or something and it works great i use it as a top coat or by itself and my nails aren't brittle any more. Also don't chip away or tear your nails it's damaging your nails.
You can apply olive or coconut oil to your nails before going to bed, this will help make them strong and healthy.

  • Brittle nails?

ok whenever i grow my nails...after so long they just become brittle and chip or break. what can i put on them so my nails look nice and dont break!Brittle nails?
Your nails are probably lacking moisture. This often causes brittle, and weak nails. The remedy for that is to mositurize them often. One way is to use a good quality cuticle oil. I like Solar Oil by CND, but there are others good ones available too. Look for one that has Jojoba Oil in it. Apply to your cuticle area and massage into your cuticles, and into your nails. This will help to replace moisture into both your cuticles, and into your nails as well, which in turn will make them both healthier, and stronger. Apply cuticle oil 2-3 times a day, every day. More often is even better. You should begin to see the results within a couple of weeks.

Also, use a good quality hand lotion as well. Always use hand lotion after washing your hands to keep both your hands and nails moisturuzed. Good hand lotion, along with cuticle oil, will help a lot with your nail problems. Moisturizing your nails often is the key to strong, and healthy nails.

A good way to help prevent your nails from drying out is to always wear gloves when doing any tasks that require the use of household chemicals and/or water - such as when cleaning or doing dishes. Water is a major cause of nail dryness and many common household chemicals, such as liquid detergents, and other cleaning agents will cause dryness, and thus - weak, brittle nails. Nail polish remover also has a drying effect when overused, especially the kind with acetone in it.

    I hope this helps!Brittle nails?
you want tough strong nails simple i promise this will work take calcium vitamins and prenatal vitamins one of each each day 6 months you can claw through a 2x4......skipper

Stop using nail polish, It really messes up your nails. I had the same problem but I stopped painting them, and now my nails are thick enough to go through just about everything without bending.
    Vitamins
    Drink milk
Well , if you are in water alot and stuff that will soften nails alot, and certain chemicals. While i was working at a shutter manufacturer (as a paint sprayer) i had to clean the gun alot and we used paint thinner for that, and also to thin the paint out with. I noticed that while i was working there that my nails got longer and alot thicker. Something about paint thinner that does it. I thought that it was just me for the longest time, til a freind of mines son said that he has cut his nails alot, and he said it was because he paints at a truck factory and the paint thinner does it. I was amazed that someone else experienced the same. LOL i know your thinking Paint thinner??? Well it works awesome. Another thing that you could do is start taking vitamins. Like womens one a day.
Eat a lot of veggies and fruit and fish. Drink no soda, only tea, water, milk, juice or cocoa. By some just for nails and rub it in nightly. Use only palmolive to do the dishes.
Buy some Knox Gelatin and drink it as directed on label. It will supplement your own natural supply in your body. This strengthens nails and is also good for all joints and cartilage.
sally henson nail products they r ace! and they bulid ur nails up nyc n strong! ;)
You are probably anaemic. Just consult the doc
    Grow new ones
Take multivitamins (which are good for many things besides nails BTW) and use Sally Hansen ';Hard As Nails'; clear polish, by itself or as a base coat.

These things have helped my nails become stronger and less likely to break.
Drink orange juice with gelatin in it. Start taking a daily multi-vitamin and get plenty of vitamin C. Foods like oatmeal will help too.
the best thing to do is to eat atleast 2 dery products a day cuz they got loads of calcium
You need hydration. You can start from within. Drink plenty of fluids. Invest in a good cuticle treatment and oil. Apply it at night and rub it in good. This promotes circulation to the nail bed and also hydrates the nail. Find a nail strengthener without Formaldehyde or Tolulene. This is very important because these chemicals dry out the nails. China Glaze, Zoya or Poshe nail products are an excellent choice. Apply the nail strengthener every day for 1 week and remove and start over again for another week. You should see results, be patient

Jello. This has collagen and is good to strengthen nails and bones. I eat jello when my nails fluctuate to grow. Some seasons they grow well and other times of year they tend to crack, peel or break easy.

The jello helps to strengthen and let them grow I've seen personally. Try it, jello comes in different flavors and is basically low calorie also.

Can add some kool whip on if you don't care for it plain also. Yummy.Try it for a week or so and see if that helps to improve this. I only eat it for a serving a day and this helps mine.
